"You will be blessed, for you have shared your food with the poor." — Proverbs 22:9
Following frequent and sustained requests for various categories of material help from brethren in Victory Baptist Church, the pastors, deacons/deaconesses, and members of the Church Council decided to find a more effective and lasting solution to the problem.
The result was the institution of a Relief Fund named the Dr. I. K. Nyameche Relief Fund, named after a gallant first Deacons’ Chairman of the church.
Victory Baptist's approach to ministry is holistic. While we are Bible-oriented with a strong teaching and prayer ministry, we have nonetheless shown concern for the plight of the needy. Scripture underscores that there will never cease to be poor in the land, and God commanded that we open wide our hand to our brothers and sisters, to the needy and the poor in our land — Deuteronomy 15:11.
In view of this, John wrote: "If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth" — 1 John 3:17–18.
Relieving the needs of humanity is biblical, and our evangelistic approach integrates concern for the needy (Acts 2:45; 4:35). Like the first church, the modern church continues to experience not only spiritual but also physical and material needs — and this forms the basis for the Relief Fund.
Periodic appeals to the brethren to make voluntary contributions to the fund.
A special church offering solely for the fund is taken during every Sunday service.
Each case is considered on its own merit. Categories that have been considered include:
Modest contributions to medical bills or prescriptions
Financial need
Student or child school fees
Bereaved / orphaned individuals
Widows and widowers
Old age support
Employment / vocational training
Petty trading and capital requirements
Rent deposit payment
Physically and mentally challenged persons
Needy and accommodation-challenged individuals
The Fund also caters to the financial requirements of many petty traders, and has sometimes paid for prescriptions directly.
In reality, the demand for financial help has always exceeded the funds available for disbursement — consequently, a queue is often resorted to.
Victory Baptist Church looks for generous men and women who will partner with us to sustain this noble agenda.
